2026 TAX PLANNING

One Big Beautiful Bill Act: What to Review Before Your Next Tax Decision

The 2025 law changed federal deductions, credits, and business provisions. The right planning step depends on the tax year, eligibility, income, records, and the decision you are considering.

Start with the provisions that affect your situation

  • Business investment: Review bonus depreciation, Section 179, and research-expense treatment before committing to equipment or other spending. An asset purchase should also fit the business's cash needs.
  • Business-owner income: Review qualified business income, owner compensation, and entity facts together. An S corporation election does not automatically create a deduction or a better result.
  • Household deductions: Check current standard-deduction, itemized-deduction, and eligibility rules. A headline deduction amount does not establish what your household can claim.
  • Energy-related spending: Several clean-vehicle and residential-energy credits ended for purchases or expenditures after the applicable 2025 deadlines. Verify the specific credit before relying on an older guide.
  • Real estate: Coordinate depreciation, passive losses, basis, sale timing, and cash flow. Review Opportunity Zone and 1031 exchange requirements separately.

What to bring to a planning review
